0 2012 EAA AirVenture Highlights

The clouds have cleared and the temperatures have cooled here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The end of the work week for most means the beginning of an exciting weekend for aviation enthusiasts!

Monday, opening day, was a tribute to the "original" airplane Dick Van Grunsven designed and designated the RV-1. Before arriving in Oshkosh, it made its way around the United States on a tour that began at Sun n' Fun in April. Tuesday hundreds of Piper Cub owners arrived to celebrate the iconic aircraft's 75th anniversary at the 60th annual "World's Greatest Aviation Celebration".

Not only did the "Spirit of Goodyear" blimp arrive on Wednesday, but it was also a day of tribute to the Doolittle Raiders and Tuskegee Airmen. EAA vice president of AirVenture features and attractions, Jim DiMatteo, said "We are honored to pay tribute at Oshkosh to those who sacrificed and wrote one of the most important chapters in American and aviation history." Ford also honored the events with a Mustang tribute:

Thursday we had a taste of "Splash-kosh" with heavy winds and rain come through, but that brought Virginia pilots "home" while we waited out the storm. We have also been grabbing as many Virginia pilots as we can to show us where they're from by putting a pin on our map.
