Want a "haunting" aviation experience?

If you're in the Halloween spirit with an aviation twist, head to Salem for the Salem Museum Ghost Walk on Saturday and Tuesday, Oct. 26. The “ghosts” will tell their stories in East Hill Cemetery and East Hill North, starting at 6:30 p.m. on those nights.

One of the featured ghosts will be William Knox Martin, a Salem-born early aviation pioneer who was the first man to fly over the Andes mountains. According to an article in the Roanoke Times, his aviation career spanned barely 17 years. In that short time, he taught flying in New England, California, Canada and Australia. He was one of the first test pilots and wartime aviators and he helped introduce aviation to South America. He was inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame in 2005.
